It is designed to remove stuck chucks but I also use it to remove and install chucks without using back gears at all. This design allows you to easily hold the stop while tightening and removing and keeps your hand and fingers away from the gear teeth. But it still also serves the function of locking the spindle tight to remove those really stuck chucks.
